Two very different examples of educational buildings were featured in this year’s first Concrete Elegance lecture: Bobby Moore Academy Secondary School, Stratford is a new school with an ambitious programme on a tight site in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Concrete provides non-combustible structures for our homes, schools, hospitals and offices, and the thermal mass to cool them in warmer summers without energy-intensive cooling systems.

‘Attention to detail’ was the title given to our most recent Concrete Elegance lectures, featuring projects by architectural practices well versed in detailing concrete. Tom Herre and Matt Ball of David Chipperfield Architects (DCA) presented Inagawa cemetery chapel and visitors centre, a thoughtful series of structures and spaces embedded into a Japanese hillside.

MPA Cement has published its 2018 Annual Performance Report, which highlights the industry’s contribution to the economy in 2017. Despite a slight drop in domestic production in 2017 compared to 2016 (3.4% reduction), cement production was 9.5 million tonnes and sales were 31% higher than in 2012, showing growth since the end of the recession period.

On the 15th September the V&A Dundee opened its doors for the first time to the public. Reportedly around 10,000 people visited the building in the first three days. Unfortunately, I wasn’t one of them, but I was privileged to be able to help organise and host an evening lecture about the building as part of our Concrete Elegance lecture series here in London.

It was another full house at the Concrete Elegance lecture which took place on the 12th June. Elaine Toogood, senior architect, The Concrete Centre shares her highlights from the projects featured: The new visitors centre at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, presented by Fergus Feilden of Feilden Fowles Architects with Greg Nordberg of engineers HRW, and the recent extension to the Templeman Library in the University of Kent presented by Suzi Winstanley of Penoyre & Prasad architects with Andy Toohey of Price & Myers engineers.

Concrete Elegance is a great lecture series to be a part of. Researching the projects to feature and hosting the evening is always a pleasure, and you never know quite what insights will be revealed about designing in concrete. Concrete is an amazing and versatile material so observing the similarities and differences of approach and the design teams’ experiences is always a highlight.
